EnvioAg’s Software’s story begins back in the mid-1970s, when a college student named Sally Robertson noticed the emergence of something called the “technology sector.” Being a math major, she found herself being drawn to a new field called “computer programming” on which this new sector was based. Sally took every course she could find that had anything to do with programming (back then it was things like FORTRAN and COBOL), and graduated from Boise State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Math and Arts.
A true pioneer among computer programmers—and among women—Sally‘s goal after graduation was to start her own technology business. She saw an opportunity right away. At that time, the big business was selling computers—really big computers. Less emphasis was put on programming to computers to do what the company wanted them to do. Enter Sally’s new company: Robco Data Systems. (Robco Data System was created in 1975 and has undergone various name changes, eventually acquired by ArmgaSys, Inc. in 2015) Like most new business owners, Sally did whatever work she could find at first, working for municipalities, construction companies, advertising agencies—and a fresh fruit product packing house or two.
One of her first packing house clients was Henggeler Packing Company of Fruitland, Idaho. It just so happened that the owner, Jerry Henggeler, was on the board of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association. Impressed by Sally’s work, he invited her to the association’s 1983 convention.
Sally trucked her steamer-trunk sized computer to the event, got invited to a lavish fresh produce industry party, and the rest, as they say, is history: Sally had found her niche.
