CANNABIS, OPIATES AND THE TREATMENT OF AGERELATED PAIN

cbd-logo_finalNovember 2, 2016 (SANTA ROSA, CA):

CARE BY DESIGN (cbd.org), one of California’s leading medical cannabis companies released a new study today, providing a compelling look at how its patients utilize medical cannabis in their personal lives. The new study surveyed 800 patients mostly between 50 and 70 years of age. Of those surveyed, over 80 percent reported suffering from chronic pain; half reported suffering from acute pain; and 42 percent reported suffering from both.

On average, respondents had tried four different treatment methods for their pain. Twenty-five percent of respondents reported having tried six or more. Patients reported that cannabis was a highly effective pain management tool with few negative side effects. Patient-reported outcomes for cannabis therapy contrasted particularly sharply with those for opiates, which while effective for pain, had a negative impact on quality of life measurements in a significant number of patients. Notably, around half of patients said that opiates had a negative impact on their lives. Furthermore, a significant number of patients reported that using cannabis led to lower rates of opiate usage.

carebydesignproductSaid Care By Design spokesperson, Nick Caston, “The study’s most striking finding was cannabis’ apparent impact on opiate reliance: Ninety-one percent of survey respondents reported that they decreased the amount of opiates they were taking or eliminated them altogether.” These observations are supported by public health statistics. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reported in 2015, “In states where it is legal to use medical marijuana to manage chronic pain and other conditions, the annual number of deaths from prescription drug overdose is 25 percent lower than in states where medical marijuana remains illegal.” “This survey brings some very important information to light,” say Nick Caston. “We see here in our patient data that cannabis is improving the quality of life of our patients—particularly elderly patients suffering from age-related pain—and that it does so without the dangerous side effects of other pain management modalities.”

The study concluded: “A tenet of healthcare in the United States is ‘First, do no harm.’ Patient reports of cannabis’ efficacy together with its low side effect profile suggest that it should be considered as a first-line treatment for pain and/or as an adjunct treatment to opiates rather than as a medication of last resort.”

Holistic Cannabis Academy Provides Online Certificate Education To Practitioners & Consumers Worldwide

Boulder, CO (November 1, 2016)

HCN_Option_3_Rev_3newCo-founded by two integrative registered dietitian nutritionists, the Holistic Cannabis Academy (HCA), a division of the Holistic Cannabis Network (HCN), has launched an online curriculum dedicated to the needs of the holistic-minded health professional, caregiver, patient and canna curious consumer.

According to a recent Gallup poll, 60% of Americans now say medical marijuana should be legal – the highest level of support in nearly a half-century of polling on this question. The consumer need and demand is obvious and what’s even more obvious is the lack of education in the health professional community. “We created this training and education because our colleagues and peers know virtually nothing about the therapeutic aspects of cannabis, cannabinoids, such as CBD, and the endocannabinoid system,” states co-founder Laura Lagano, MS, RDN, CDN.

“Our recent online Holistic Cannabis Summit (HCS), where 16,000 people tuned-in worldwide, demonstrated the demand for credible, reliable cannabis information. By getting cannabis competent, practitioners can offer an enhanced client experience, differentiate themselves, and build their business – all at the same time,” adds co-founder Donna Shields, MS, RDN. The Academy offers two learning paths – certificate programs as a Holistic Medical Cannabis Practitioner™ and Holistic Medical Cannabis Counselor™. Lectures are delivered by leading medical cannabis experts, such as Dr. Ethan Russo, and include healing modalities such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, nutrition, chiropractic care, yoga, and Ayurveda demonstrating the integrative approach for cannabis care. Collateral materials for practitioners plus printable handouts for distribution to patients accompany each module. Plus, value-added monographs and devices make this a turnkey solution for the busy health professional.

Faces Human Capital Management celebrates its one-year anniversary as it breaks new ground in the legal cannabis HR sector

FHCM-logoFaces Human Capital Management (HCM), a leader in assisting the rapidly-evolving legal cannabis industry with its unique human resources issues, marks a double milestone this month; as it celebrates its one-year anniversary and the acquisition of its 14th client.

“We’ve been working with a pioneering group of cannabis companies, who are successfully applying our management solutions to issues like HR and payroll, as well as workers’ compensation and benefits,” says Faces HCM co-founder and managing director Caela Bintner. “It’s been exciting and rewarding to know that we’re helping make the legal marijuana industry that much more of a legitimate business sector.”

Along with its current governmental and regulatory challenges, the legal cannabis industry is coping with some garden-variety, corporate growing pains; as companies struggle to attract and retain the best employees. According to a recent survey of employees in the legal marijuana sector, 80 percent consider cannabis to be their career – but only one-third of those surveyed say they would recommend their current employee to a friend. Chris Cassese, Faces HCM’s co-founder and managing director, says cannabis business owners are often so preoccupied with crucial regulatory issues such as compliance, packaging, taxation and transportation that they forget about “the people side” of their industry. “Turnover is a real issue,” he notes, “Along with the toll on morale, it can end up costing a business owner around 40 percent of a person’s annual salary to replace some of the more specialized positions in the cannabis industry; jobs like budtenders, dry-curers and extraction technicians.”

“The industry leaders, the people with the most promising dispensaries and grow houses, they’re coming from a place of passion when it comes to cannabis,” says Bintner. “But that passion for marijuana doesn’t always translate into an in-depth understanding of business and regulatory compliance. So we’re helping them get that set up, to become successful and to avoid the pitfalls that would otherwise get them shut down.”

But that work is not a one-size-fits-all operation. The staff at Faces HCM will go over metrics such as job costs, supply chain issues and creation of work force units as part of their consultative process. “Each client has been so different when it comes to their company’s needs,” says Bintner. “So we drill down and work out the best solutions in each case.” And their clients agree. “(We’ve) been pleased with the effective and efficient process and the quality of candidates they have provided us,” says Jeanette Ward, director of data and marketing at MJ Freeway, one of the cannabis industry’s leading software and small business services companies — which has a recruiting contract with Faces HCM.

The key, adds, Cassese, is education. “We thought this industry was ready for the business tenets, the principles that other big-box, non-cannabis companies are using; that could be recreated and tailored towards the cannabis industry. And after years of research, we’ve been able to create PEO (professional employer organization) models that fit the needs of cannabis businesses.” Faces HCM is also taking their HR and management template beyond their Colorado headquarters. They’re currently working with businesses in Massachusetts and Nevada and have plans to expand into other states. “We’ve taken a fresh approach to a proven model and applied it to a new industry,” says Bintner. “This is how we ensure these unique cannabis companies can retain the mission, spirit and values of the cannabis culture, but also evolve into what mainstream America will see as legitimate, responsible businesses.”

Marijuana Packaging & Labeling Training

CCannabisregulatorysolutionsannabis Regulatory Solutions is pleased to announce the offering of a new Colorado Marijuana Packaging and Labeling training program. The program provides regulatory insight to comply with new requirements that go into effect on October 1, 2016. So, now is the opportune time for industry to learn, and to prepare for, the changes on the horizon.

Why Marijuana Packaging and Labeling Are Important: Colorado’s marijuana packaging and labeling rules were established to prevent underage usage of marijuana and the reduction of accidental marijuana consumption by children and others. The State Licensing Authority finds it essential to regulate the lawful sales of marijuana and marijuana products in a packaging that is not easily opened by, or attractive to, children. For example, the rules specifically prohibit packaging designed to appeal to children through the avoidance of the words “candy” or “candies” and images of cartoons. Many packaging and labeling infractions are considered license violations affecting public safety. Penalties for this type of violation may include license suspension, a fine per individual violation, a fine in lieu of suspension of up to $100,000, and/or license revocation depending on the mitigating and aggravating circumstances. Sanctions may also include restrictions on the license. Conversely, adherence to the rules will result in improved public health and safety, and the reduction in regulatory and business risk to due to fewer instances of non-compliance.

Agenda and Course Materials: The training program provides Colorado licensed marijuana businesses with knowledge to meet new Marijuana Packaging and Labeling requirements (most of which are found in the 1000 series of rules). To ensure compliance, participants must also obtain a working understanding of both the Inventory Tracking System and transport rules. The training therefore introduces the requirements of using the Inventory Tracking System, compliance to transport, waste management, and record keeping rules.

Who Should Attend: Medical and Retail Marijuana Business Owners and Licensees, Marijuana Cultivators, Marijuana Product Manufacturers, employees who package and label product, and employees that transport packaged marijuana and marijuana product. Anyone who physically packages and labels marijuana and marijuana products would benefit from attending the course.

Cost: The cost is $329 per person and includes the first year access fees to our Training Resource Center. Thereafter, access fees are $100 per year per company, or $39 per individual. National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) Members receive a 20% purchase discount.

Secure Online Store and Training Resource Center: Classroom training materials may be found within our password-protected Training Resource Center. These includes classroom presentations, 14 packaging and labeling compliance checklists, and 19 packaging and labeling regulatory flowcharts. The checklists are suitable for compliance audits. The flowcharts help to remove what is oftentimes confusing regulatory language for better overall understanding. Our secure online system takes the hassles out of record keeping by allowing users to download course materials, test results, certifications, and even course evaluations (if completed).

About Us: Cannabis Regulatory Solutions is a Colorado MED approved Responsible Vendor Program Training Provider. We were established to introduce quality training programs and innovative after-training tools and services to the marijuana industry. We are passionate about helping compliance professionals meet the ever-changing regulatory requirements of the marijuana industry. We seek to enter into long-term relationships by providing clients with exceptional training programs and regulatory support long after the training has ended. urban-gro Offers Solution to Cannabis Odor Issues

URBAN_GRO_PRODUCTS_SOLUTION_TRANSP_BG_PNG_copyAs Denver City Council passes an odor-control ordinance for commercial marijuana grow facilities and other businesses that release odors in the Mile High City, urban-gro, the product solutions expert for the commercial Cannabis cultivator, offers up a cutting-edge solution: FOGCO odor control system.

“Communities are seeking practical solutions from the Cannabis industry to mitigate the odor associated with flowering Cannabis. The good news is that FOGCO is an easy solution that will keep commercial Cannabis cultivators compliant,” said urban-gro CEO Brad Nattrass. “urban-gro is the preferred provider of FOGCO, a cost-effective system that eliminates the Cannabis smell from grow facilities’ exhaust systems. This makes it easy for cultivators to comply with the new ordinance. FOGCO can be an important component to being a good neighbor.”

fogcoBy injecting a proprietary blend of all natural and biodegradable ingredients into a high-pressure fog system, FOGCO provides billions of atomized droplets that attach to and eliminate the smell of Cannabis. FOGCO has over 25 years of experience mitigating industrial odor, and this system provides numerous benefits to the Cannabis industry including facilitating licensing and application process approvals; neutralizing odors; and eliminating complaints, violations and fines. The system provides maximum coverage with minimum investment, and is non-toxic with no contamination impact.

The City of Denver’s recent odor-control ordinance is designed to reduce the strong odors produced from businesses such as marijuana grows, pet food factories, asphalt factories, wood preservation companies, oil refining factors and sewage treatment plants. The Colorado Cannabis industry occupies large industrial space in clustered areas around the I-25 and I-70 Junction. Since legalization, the Cannabis industry has boosted the industrial market in Denver and has lead to record-high rents and low vacancy rates according to director of research and analysis for CBRE in Denver.

urban-gro will present and exhibit at Home Grown Maine 2016 from June 3-5; urban-gro’s integrated pest management expert John Chandler and energy expert Shelly Peterson will provide industry perspective at NCIA’s Cannabis Business Summit & Expo 2016 in Oakland from June 20-22 (Booths #122-123). They will present at Imperious Expo in Tacoma, Wash., July 20-21; as well as the Southwest Cannabis Conference San Diego August 6-7 and Phoenix Oct. 22-23; urban-gro will participate in the fifth Annual Marijuana Business Conference & Expo, November 16-18, Las Vegas, Booth #501. ‘

URBAN-GRO INTRODUCES PROCIDIC2 THE FIRST REGISTERED PESTICIDE FOR THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

Urban Gro - Logourban-gro, the product solutions expert for the commercial Cannabis cultivator, has launched nationwide sales of Procidic2, a FIFRA 25b product, the first state-registered organic pesticide labeled specifically for Cannabis crops. urban-gro is the sole U.S. distributor of Procidic2. Procidic2, a fungicide and bactericide, is registered with WSDA for Organic Agricultural Use. Procidic2 works on contact and systemically with the Cannabis crop. It is rapidly absorbed into the plant and moves towards the apex, allowing new tissues to be free of infection and reducing the risk of future bacterial and fungal growth. Procidic2, with Cannabis listed on its label, meets many States’ stringent requirements for Cannabis application. Procidic2 is now labeled and cleared for use on Cannabis in 18 states, including Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. The next three states, Maryland, New Hampshire and Oregon, and the District of Columbia, are in final process to clear for State approval. The remaining two states, Arizona and New Mexico, are in the first application process with State Departments of Agriculture.

procidic2The Cannabis industry continues to respond to changing regulations regarding pesticide use for Cannabis. “Growers are grappling with the issue of protecting their plants while still remaining compliant with the industry’s fluctuating regulatory landscape,” said John Chandler, Vice President of Cultivation Technologies, urban-gro. “Procidic2 is the first Cannabis-labeled and legally approved pesticide product to protect growers’ harvests and fight against common fungi, specifically Powdery Mildew. urban-gro has been working to get this product approved since the beginning and we are pleased to be the sole U.S. distributor of this product nationwide.”

“Greenspire Global’s exclusive affiliation with urban-gro offers our outstanding Procidic2 product the national reach and in-house expertise of a strong Cannabis-focused distributor to service this rapidly growing industry,” said Steve Knauss, President, Greenspire Global. The combination of organic acids comprised in Procidic2 are ingredients classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe), which reduces the risk for pesticide applicators, and because the product has no REI (restricted entry interval), it allows growers to spray the product and still work in the same vicinity. When used properly and integrated into a regimented pest management plan, Procidic2 is a FIFRA 25b exempt organic broad-spectrum bactericide and fungicide compound formulated to protect crops during all stages of growth. Following Procidic2 label instructions allows the producer to work with beneficials (organisms such as ladybugs, lacewings and bacteria) that feed on or parasitize pests of crops, an emerging pest control solution for the Cannabis industry today. urban-gro recommends spraying the crop from the vegetative to the budding stage to ensure the pesticide has fully traveled through the inside of the plant.

In addition to providing organic pesticide options, urban-gro also offers beneficial biologicals for commercial scale grow operators’ integrated pest management (IPM) plans. urban-gro has formed an exclusive partnership with Biobest, a Belgian-based global leader in biological control of pests. Biobest’s organic bio-control solutions for natural crop care help growers achieve high yields of premium quality residue-free crops. Their range of bio-control products serves as the cornerstone of a successful integrated pest management strategy and helps cultivators grow a successful organic harvest. Chandler will participate in the NCIA panel “The Wild West of Marijuana Pesticides” at NCIA’s Cannabis Business Summit & Expo 2016 in Oakland from June 20-22 (Booths #122-123).

Jane Announces Program That Combines Banking, Transport and Cash Management To Solve the Cannabis Retailer’s Biggest Challenge

jane_positive_tagThe Jane “Triple Play” is unlocking banking for the cannabis industry.

Jane, the kiosk solution for cannabis retailers, announced an exclusive program that combines Banking, Cash Transport and Cash Management. The all-in-one solution solves the biggest challenge facing licensed medical and recreational dispensaries today: limited access to legitimate banking.

Cannabis retailers are forced to run their business without traditional banking and financial services. This creates very real challenges around safety, security, cash management and running an efficient business. It also puts a massive strain on resources and takes employee focus away from what is most important – customers.

In response to these challenges, Jane launched the Triple Play to provide dispensaries with the same financial services available to every other retailer. The Triple Play combines Jane’s cash management kiosk with cash transport from one of several top security firms and banking with an insured and fully compliant financial institution. The banking services would include depository accounts, checking accounts, wire transfers and more.

Cannabis retailers can also increase the level of protection, accountability and traceability of a dispensary’s cash with secure and discrete cash transport in fully armored vehicles by highly trained armed personnel with law enforcement and military experience.

“Jane was born from the belief that cannabis retailers should have access to the same financial services as any other retailers,” commented David Ellerstein, CEO, Jane. “The Triple Play is an example of our commitment to empowering dispensary owners with the tools they have been forced to do without because of the irrational discrimination facing our industry.”

Learn more about the Triple Play at http://www.trustjane.com/jane-triple-play.

About Jane:
At Jane we understand the many banking, operational and regulatory challenges facing cannabis retailers. Our mission is to empower cannabis retailers with the tools to grow their business in a secure, compliant and efficient manner while fulfilling the desire of today’s consumers for greater control over their shopping experience. The Jane kiosk is a cash management solution for licensed medical and recreational cannabis dispensaries. Jane was developed by a team with over 100 years of combined experience in payments, banking, kiosks and cannabis, who are laser focused on driving measurable results for dispensary owners. What Happened With Guardian?

Small-OGALogo-Long_-_transparentGuardian is a mite spray previously manufactured by All In Enterprises that was labeled as all natural, with ingredients like cinnamon and lemongrass oil. The product was being sold through grow stores across America, and was in heavy use by cannabis cultivators because of its effectiveness against mites and its proposed harmlessness. Unbeknownst to the growers and growshops that were supporting the product, it actually contained a harmful chemical not listed on the label called abamectin.

guardianAbamectin is an EPA registered insecticide, with strict tolerances in effect due to its acute toxicity to mammals. The failure to include this active ingredient on the product label is not only misleading and potentially harmful to both the applicator and consumer of the end product, it’s also a federal violation. To further the controversy, the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) released a list of approved pesticides to use in cannabis cultivation and Guardian was on it.

OG Analytical discovered the issue when clients repeatedly complained about the finding of abamectin in their organic flowers. After the third client told us they were only using Guardian, we encouraged one of these clients to bring in a sample of the Guardian itself for us to test. Sure enough, it came up hot for abamectin. Because this finding poses both a state and federal violation, we contacted the ODA and turned the issue over to them. By the next morning, they had launched a full investigation into the issue and were already visiting growshops to collect samples of their own. They confirmed our finding from several independent sources across Oregon. The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), upon notice from the ODA, subsequently launched their own investigation and further confirmed the finding in several samples in Colorado.

The ODA and CDA have both turned the issue over to the EPA for further investigation. The ODA issued a Stop Sale order on February 5th, and the product has been pulled from grow shop shelves across the nation. They also removed Guardian from the approved list of pesticides, and are encouraging growers to stop using the product. On February 16th, the EPA issued a Federal Stop Sale Order.
OG Analytical hosted a brief info-session on this issue at our January Cannabis Science Pub in Eugene, OR. You can check out the video recording at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSP1dc0D0nk for more information, including what to do if you’ve used Guardian in your garden.
