It’s been a year of big change for NCIA. As we come to the end of 2022, we want to take a moment to send a message to our members and supporters about these changes, and most importantly, get excited for what’s next for the future of NCIA events.
The events industry has faced unforeseen challenges these last couple of years, and NCIA was not isolated from these issues. Outside of needing to postpone our large tradeshows until late 2021, we also had to postpone a whole calendar of approximately 40+ events nationwide which was our primary way of connecting our community and meeting with our members face to face. Our team overcame these challenges by building our expansive digital presence and online events program to continue to provide education and exposure opportunities to our members, however this did still require a significant pivot in organizational strategy.
Due to the residual hardships brought by the pandemic, we learned earlier this year that the Cannabis Business Summit & Expo was not going to be able to be produced on the scale or quality that we or our members had come to expect throughout the years. So, in tandem with our previous tradeshow co-producers, we made the difficult decision to dissolve our existing partnership and accepted an offer from them to acquire our tradeshow portfolio. For those who have been attending our tradeshows since 2014, we can’t thank you enough for your participation in those events and making them so impactful for the industry. There are too many good memories to revisit, and hope you take a moment to remember some of your personal highlights throughout the years as we look forward to coming together for new events in 2023.
For now, we will be taking a hiatus from the tradeshow space. This will allow our team to refocus our efforts into other impactful networking and educational opportunities. We’re excited to get back to our roots and focus our efforts on intentional and innovative gatherings that connect Main Street cannabis businesses with each other and with NCIA’s advocacy efforts.
We’ve listened to the feedback from our members, and know that in-person networking remains essential to building your business and growing your network. In these uncertain economic times, every dollar spent and any time away from your business impacts your bottom line. As the leading cannabis trade association representing small-business owners, we’re committed to making the investment to meet our members where they are, and to continue facilitating experiences where our members can make key connections with fellow business owners. Moving into 2023, we’re reinvigorating our events program starting with our regional Industry Social and Cannabis Caucus event series, leading into the cannabis industry’s biggest policy and advocacy event of the year: NCIA’s 11th Annual Cannabis Industry Lobby Days.

In this webinar from the morning of Friday, March 27 at 10:00 AM MT, NCIA’s Director of Public Policy, Andrew Kline, presents an update focused on federal cannabis policy issues taken up by NCIA’s Policy Council, including vaping illnesses, highlights of the findings from the Illicit Market Summit, and comments to be submitted to the DEA and NIDA. We also explore the COVID-19 responses across the United States.
Michelle Rutter Friberg, NCIA’s Deputy Director of Government Relations, shares information about how to stay politically active on behalf of cannabis policy reform while still practicing physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We explore the impact that COVID-19 is having on small cannabis businesses, plus an update on the action and movement we’ve seen in Congress, including a recent letter sent regarding Small Business Administration loans for cannabis businesses.

Michelle Rutter Friberg is deputy director of government relations for the National Cannabis Industry Association. Prior to working for NCIA, Michelle was a research analyst at a government affairs firm in Washington, D.C., where she analyzed and tracked legislation on numerous issues. Michelle graduated from James Madison University in 2012, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History. During her studies, she held a year-long internship with Virginia House of Delegates member Tony Wilt (R). There, she communicated with constituents, businesses, and government officials alike, facilitating meaningful conversations. Michelle was also a member of a pre-law fraternity where she planned events and hosted social functions that sought to encourage long-lasting professional and personal relationships with members. A native Virginian, Michelle currently resides in the Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Capitol Hill.
Andrew Kline
Director of Public Policy, National Cannabis Industry Association
Andrew Kline is NCIA’s Director of Public Policy. In this new role established in early 2019 at NCIA, Andrew leads NCIA’s substantive public policy efforts, striving to prepare and protect the state-legal cannabis industry. He will also lead NCIA’s Policy Council, a group of NCIA members focused on influencing federal and state public policy. Kline most recently served as President of the National Association of Cannabis Businesses (NACB), the first self-regulatory organization for the high-growth cannabis industry. At the NACB, Andrew led the creation of national standards for the state-legal cannabis industry, oversaw its standards governance board, and led day to day operations and strategic planning. Kline has a deep and celebrated background in public policy, law enforcement, and coalition creation/management. He is renowned for his ability to create solutions to complex domestic and global public policy issues that appeal to both private and public constituencies.
Every day, our Government Relations team is keeping our finger on the pulse of what’s happening on the Hill and how it affects our industry. In this case, we have important news from D.C. about movement to fix the banking crisis faced by cannabis industry operators.

They held the first ever hearing on marijuana and financial services, entitled: Challenges and Solutions: Access to Banking Services for Cannabis-Related Businesses. This Thanksgiving holiday, we wish to simply say THANK YOU for being a part of the next great American industry, and for taking this journey with us as we all create a responsible, legitimate cannabis industry together.
As the NCIA staff begins to wrap up the year 2018 and look ahead into 2019, not only is there so much to be thankful for in this year alone, but also in the last eight years since NCIA’s founding in 2010. Our membership has grown to over 1,700 member companies strong, and we’ve seen the industry evolve and mature at an impressive pace during this time.
NCIA’s executive director and co-founder Aaron Smith is “…deeply grateful for the hundreds of responsible cannabis businesses that have invested in the vital work needed to advance our industry through their membership with NCIA. NCIA and our dedicated members have been keeping busy during the Summer months, and July was no exception as our acclaimed Quarterly Cannabis Caucus event series returned with numerous editions held across the country in both new and familiar locations.
We took these opportunities to further connect with and update our network on the incredible positive energy exhibited by our members and supporters throughout the summer including:

• The 7th Annual Cannabis Industry Lobby Days, our most impactful advocacy-focused event. This Summer, following our trip to D.C., we have seen a substantial increase in the number of co-sponsors on cannabis-related legislation we focused on in May.

In our first week, NCIA’s hosted our first event in Maine, and it was a smashing success! Attendees were caught up to speed on how the landscape has been developing with implementation of the adult use initiative passed last November by David Boyer, the Maine Political Director of Marijuana Policy Project.
In addition, our Washington members and supporters were joined by guest speaker Rep. Roger Goodman (D- 45th District) who provided attendees with a Washington Legislative Update.
At the end of the week, we had yet another record setting event in Colorado! Just over 200 cannabusiness professionals joined us for an inspiring evening of networking and information sharing. The event was extra special as we were joined by newly elected members of our Board of Directors; Christie Lunsford of Pro MAX Grow and Endocannabinoidology, Sean McAllister of McAllister Garfiled P.C., and Shannon Fender of Native Roots Colorado.
In our second week, we hosted our Tri-State event in Brooklyn, NY where special guest Dylan Schwartz, Candidate for New York City Council in the 51st District of Staten Island provided a New York Legislative Update and explained the history and importance surrounding his cannabis friendly candidacy. In Oregon, we returned to Portland where we hosted Jesse Sweet, Administrative Policy & Process Director of Oregon Liquor Control Commission at ecotrust once again.
In our final week, we were excited to hold our first-ever event in San Jose, CA, at our Northern California Caucus, as well as officially welcome the new Executive Director of the California Cannabis Industry Association, Lindsay Robinson! In Southern California, we moved our caucus to San Diego and Josh Drayton, Deputy Director of the California Cannabis Industry Association provided attendees with an in depth update on the current status of MAUCURSA. We concluded our Q3 #CannabisCaucus series in the Midwest with an inaugural event in Columbus, Ohio where we also officially launched our newest state affiliate, the National Cannabis Industry Association of Ohio. In addition to an optional, pre-caucus tour of member business Apeks Supercritical, attendees were also treated to hearing from State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-25th), a lead proponent of the recently passed medical cannabis legislation.

NCIA just wrapped up the the most recent editions of our regular member event series, the Quarterly Cannabis Caucuses. These events are designed to prepare our members for the uncertain times ahead and provide them the tools they need to help continue the positive momentum seen for our issues on the federal level.
Over the course of three weeks in April, we brought together more than 750 industry professionals, representing more than 300 individual cannabis businesses in eight cities spread across seven states. In Colorado, Northern California, and Southern California, we had more than 150 attendees join us at each event, all surpassing our previous attendance records set in 2016. The continued growth and support of these events has been incredible to witness! Thank you to all those who participated last month and provided us the opportunity to foster this growing community.

We were thrilled in our first week to be joined in Washington by Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes, in the Northeast by Massachusetts Representative Dave Rogers (D-24), and in Colorado by State Senator Tim Neville (R-16).
The following week in Oregon, Jeffrey Rhoads, Senior Policy Advisor on Marijuana to Governor Kate Brown, and Tara Sulzen, Regional Director for Rep. Earl Blumenauer, spoke in Oregon at ecotrust.
In our final week we were joined at Meadow in San Francisco by Jeff Sparks with the Office of CA State Senator Scott Wiener (D – 11th District). Then we welcomed Pamela Epstein, consultant and attorney at Green Wise Consulting and Hoban Law Group, to the historic Andaz Hotel for our first event in West Hollywood.
Finally, Jeff Irwin, the Political Director of the Michigan Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, spoke at a standing-room-only event at Om of Medicine in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The event was NCIA’s first Michigan gathering in nearly four years, and with 75 attendees, set an attendance record for our Midwest Caucus. We were incredibly excited to see such a strong show of unity among the advocates and industry players following the announcement of a coalition to put adult-use legalization on the ballot in 2018.

On February 16th, the House of Representatives took another step towards recognizing the need for federal reform of cannabis laws. Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Jared Polis (D-CO), and Don Young (R-AK) announced their newly formed Congressional Cannabis Caucus. The bipartisan coalition will focus on issues like medical research, access for veterans, and business needs — including banking and 280E reform.
The four co-chairs of the caucus were united in their support for states to be allowed to determine their own cannabis policies. In addition, the group noted that the growing momentum for reform across the country has finally reached the halls of Congress. With eight more states legalizing some form of cannabis just this past November, the caucus co-chairs say there has been a “tremendous increase” in interest for joining the caucus, including from Republicans. The caucus will also allow members to talk freely about cannabis legislation and give the opportunity to show that cannabis consumers and entrepreneurs are an important part of the American economy.
Prior to the announcement today, the House had started an informal marijuana working group, but decided that it’s now time for a more formal cannabis caucus that seeks to educate other Members of Congress on the discrepancy between state and federal law, the importance of making sure that cannabis businesses are treated fairly, and that states’ rights are protected. The Cannabis Caucus is also an opportunity for NCIA to educate Capitol Hill staffers and policymakers on the issues our members face on a regular basis.
