Social equity can be boiled down to a way of seeking remedy for the harms caused by the racist war on drugs and to help individuals, families, and communities that have been disproportionately impacted by prohibition. A big part of this is making sure that no one is left behind by the economic developments created by making cannabis legal. As local, state, and federal governments continue to grapple with implementing policies that effectively address this issue, there is a lot the industry can – and should – do to help make sure that the opportunities in regulated cannabis markets are inclusive and equitable, and to help support businesses owned by members of marginalized communities.
As many as 70% of consumers want brands to take a stand on social and political issues. That’s a 66% increase from 2017, according to Sprout Social’s 2019 #BrandsGetReal survey. Customers are more likely to purchase from companies that take a stand on causes aligning with their values and more importantly, companies hold the power to make a difference; even if it’s encouraging people to take baby steps towards a larger solution. Data shows they might already be doing that, because 67% of consumers say brands are raising awareness around just causes, and 62% believe brands are educating them on important topics.
Here are just a few ways that cannabis retailers can help be a part of the social equity solution to economic unfairness created by the failed war on drugs:
Partner with Job Programs
Cannabis arrests or convictions can erect barriers in someone’s life. More specifically, they can affect housing, education, and career prospects. Consider partnering with city, state, and national programs and organizations that are creating pathways to cannabis ownership and employment – including the formerly incarcerated – to create job opportunities for underserved communities.
Expungement Days
Reach out to a local law firm or social justice organization and talk about hosting “expungement days.” Your efforts will help provide free legal measures for expunging low-level cannabis-related convictions. The Last Prisoner Project is a cannabis reformation project seeking to release prisoners currently convicted for cannabis-related crimes and help them assimilate back into society. However, local organizations may often have direct experience with this work in your communities and have well-established relationships with them to help better connect with the people who need these services the most.
Reach out to them and see what they recommend before planning your expungement day. You can also find out more information about expungement efforts nationally at the Collateral Consequences Resource Center.
Create shelf space
Socially conscious companies should show equity and racial justice on your stores’ shelves. Whether it is making a “social equity section” or finding ways to educate budtenders on the merits and stories behind the products, you will be moving sales in the right direction and promoting socially conscious consumer patterns. You can also provide tabling space for brand ambassadors to help promote social equity company products that you carry. This not only helps the brands but also creates greater loyalty to your store.
Find products that are both socially equitable and fit your dispensary’s needs. That way, you push the product because you love the product, not just because it’s trendy. But in doing so, you are contributing to positive social change and acceptance, and driving commerce toward BIPOC-owned companies. Remember, the goal is equity.
Form equitable partnerships for ownership
Are you a retailer, cultivator, or production company? Maybe you’re a vertically integrated, multi-state operation. You might not even touch the cannabis plant at all, but provide services to those who do. No matter who you are in cannabis, find ways to partner with social equity companies and help increase their recognition. Maybe it’s mutually beneficial joint venture projects on brands or another arrangement, but find ways to form fair and collaborative relationships.
Above all, keep it real
In the end, authenticity is key, and to take a stand in a way that inspires customers: your message can’t be filled with empty words. If you’re a company that’s looking for causes to rally behind, keep it in your wheelhouse and make sure your audience will resonate with the partnerships you’re creating.
Retail businesses have the power to become change agents and inspire customers to take action in their own backyards. Seek out opportunities like the ones we mentioned and provide opportunities for wealth generation, education, and social restoration in marginalized communities.
According to statistics, you’ll make a lasting impression on your audience, increase sales, and you’ll be a force for positive social change as you impact lives in your community and beyond. What’s better than that?
Member Blog: Cannabis Partnerships – The Importance of Building a Successful Business
The grass roots of the cannabis industry fostered, often through necessity, a strong sense of community and encouraged innovation and sharing of techniques and methods to cultivate the various strains of cannabis. Learning from what has come before and working together in a sense of community is still as applicable today as the industry becomes more commercialized across the globe. The pioneers of this community have evolved into a more diverse group of entrepreneurs, across many dimensions that provide a rich base of skills and knowledge that has been shared and cultivated into a matrix of businesses and relationships.
Applied DNA Sciences entered into the cannabis space in 2018. We joined NCIA and exhibited at our first NCIA trade show, Cannabis Business Summit & Expo, in San Jose that year. I wasn’t sure what to expect and the type of conversation that may occur. The doors opened on the first day, and our molecular spaying chamber attracted attendees, which led to an engaging discussion about the platform and its benefits. The surprising aspects were the various businesses at the show, researchers-PHD level, cultivators, processors, dispensaries owners, new license holders, state government, and others. They also represented a range of how many years they are involved in cannabis, from over 20 years to just getting involved, and there to learn. This first show demonstrated how important it is to be very engaged in the industry and associations like NCIA, but equally important are the partnerships that you need to form to provide solutions that are required to meet the needs of industry and consumers alike.
Partnerships form across many aspects of the cannabis business. While our technology may have been at first intimidating, as we shared our vision with this expanding network we have been fortunate to find businesses, entrepreneurs and subject matter experts who share our passion about what this industry needs to become. We have teamed up with several companies ranging from cultivation specialists, software platforms providers, business and government consulting entities, just to mention a few. The key to these agreements is the complementary nature both entities can provide to address business needs such as regulatory compliance, material and product traceability, brand differentiations, IP protection, risk mitigation, anti-counterfeiting and diversion, proof of origin, and a host of others.
As the industry continues to grow we know not every partner will remain static in their business goals, or even if they can survive the ever-changing landscape of regulation or the fluctuations of the market. The key to strategic alignment however comes from working with partners who share the vision of what the industry can be; safe for everyone, transparent in both chain-of-custody and financials, and most importantly accessible for those who need it. Companies in this space must be nimble, adapt to both the present conditions but remain steadfast in their ultimate goals.
So you think you found a strategic partner, who shares your vision. Now what? The complicated patchwork of U.S. legalization does not make your next steps as easy as it should be. Especially when you are considering moving your brand or differentiated products into new states and territories. The great hands-on experience, craftsmanship, and care of what makes your product special cannot be transported beyond the narrow lines of where it has been licensed, so often you are rebuilding or replicating with a partner in a new market. Possible of course, but often met with unforeseen issues in supply chain control and distribution. Even in the case where you are using technology unrelated to the physical product (cultivation systems, seed to sale, or logistics), each state or even county may require a different tracking system, API, or competing system to connect with. The multifaceted mosaic that makes up the community of growers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in the cannabis community is a hotbed of passion and innovation, finding opportunity is not the problem, translating this to success is the work.
Outlining a list of mutually agreed-upon goals and milestones is critical to success. Establishing a set of metrics to evaluate the progress of the partnership allows for quick adjustments if required. A critical tactical approach that may seem insignificant is to have a set weekly status call to help with relationship building and reviewing the progress plan will help keep the momentum moving forward. Also, having executive leadership involved provides quick decision-making, adjusting strategies, and deploying both human and financial resources effectively against prioritized engagements.
The cannabis industry is maturing each year and will see faster advancements when regulations sort out over the next several years. It’s essential to establish your partnering strategy now, so you can get critical relationships in place with solid execution plans and prepare to implement your joint solutions with minimum friction.

It can be tricky enough to find funding for a new business in any industry, but marijuana businesses are at that much more of a disadvantage. Strict regulations, less-than-favorable taxation laws, and straight-up illegality of federal funding stack up against those looking for their starting dollar in the industry.
Without having this backing, dispensary owners need to be creative and resourceful and draw upon the support of private investors to fund their dispensary goals.
Financial planning and sourcing of funds should be a large component of the business plan. Demonstrating an understanding of the scope of start-up costs for a dispensary includes:
Licensing/application costs
Working capital requirements
Cost of inventory (e.g. initial flower, edibles, accessories)
Technology costs (e.g. Point-of-sale system, server costs)
Real estate (e.g. mortgage payments or rent)
Staff training and compensation
Marketing and advertising
While budding cannabis entrepreneurs do have a limited number of funding options, there is still hope. You just have to know where to look.
Self-Funding
Many marijuana start-ups have invested a lot of their own savings into their businesses, recognizing their funding limitations. Speed in the industry is essential, but you may need to take a little extra time to raise your own capital before you turn the “Open” sign on.
Friends & Family
Crowdfunding is becoming increasingly popular for a variety of causes, and reaching out to like-minded individuals in the community who support your vision, and are willing to give you a boost in funds, is not at all unheard of. While there may be limitations in the ways you can publicly crowd-fund, you may be able to hold private events to raise money from your friends and family, as well as those in the community.
Partnerships
The “green rush” that marijuana legalization has caused makes finding potential partners, with similar goals and larger bank accounts, easier to find. There are so many facets to success in the industry, and valuable partnerships can take some of the strain off your own venture. After all, two heads are often better than one!
Cannabis-Specific Investment Groups
A great indicator of progress for the legal cannabis industry is the number of cannabis-specific investment groups that have cropped up across the country, giving entrepreneurs a helpful resource. In fact, last year, these groups provided 18% of marijuana funding.
